A huge range of problems on holiday have been uncovered from cockroach nests to scams and used condoms

• Almost half said that they ended up paying more than they had planned for with car rentals being a contributing factor
• UK comes second along with Ireland for best place to visit this year as well as being voted the place where most people have suffered bad experiences7 June 2010 – A Brits get ready to enjoy their annual holidays this year, a new survey shows some alarming results with the state of accommodation often being the worst problem. The survey was conducted by Carrentals.co.uk and 1,500 people were questioned about their horrible holiday experiences.
The majority of those problems involved animal infestations with a variety of problems including rats, cockroaches, worms, spiders, ants, termites, snakes, lizards and possums with one in three admitting to this particular problem.
The low standard of holiday resort accommodation as well as villas and hotels was also noted with half claiming their rooms were not clean enough. Some said they had vomit on their sheets as well as urine and others found used condoms. Broken furniture was another common complaint.
Car rentals were also criticised for making additional costs to the holiday as 27% say that they paid more than they had budgeted for. A whopping 40% said they paid more for the whole holiday than they had planned and excess baggage as well as medical bills also caused more spending.
The Managing Director of the car hire gurus Carrentals.co.uk said of the findings: “It is vital that people take the time to do some online research before making any reservations. Car hire is another area that needn’t be an additional cost and we advise that to avoid unforeseen extra costs for car rentals that holidaymakers follow a few basic rules.”

The worst experiences had by holidaymakers are the following:

• Bed bugs made one boy’s face swell to twice its normal size
• One budget conscious holidaymaker booked a holiday that was advertised at £110 and paid £3,400
• A coach driver knocked down a cyclist and promptly ran from the scene leaving bewildered passengers to handle the accident
• A dead gecko found at the bottom of a kettle after it had been used to make a cup of tea with caused a couple in Singapore to be less than impressed with their hotel facilitiesIn contrast to all of the nasty findings, the survey also revealed that Spain is the number one tourist hotspot for UK tourists with the UK and Ireland second. Many claim they will still take at least two holidays this year and bad weather puts people off staycationing. Scottish people are most likely to save money by holidaying in the UK and Ireland in 2010.
Gareth continued to say: “The recession doesn’t seem to have put people off their holidays this year and many are choosing to either staycation or take their trip abroad. The UK and Ireland look set to welcome many visitors and it is a good sign for tourism at home.”
Booking holidays online is also popular with more than 80% of holidaymakers going online to book their travel plans. Only 10% used an agent and a mere 6% did it over the telephone.
